It ain't just PLAY! :)

Clara and Mengying are quite new to the English language. This week they have discovered their similar love for the Drama Area. This blooming friendship is so beautiful to watch! At DEAR time they read to each other in Chinese and French. Outside they get on the sandpit and make strawberry birthday cakes! Watching them hold hands in the toilet whilst waiting for their turn is heartwarming.

I am truly amazed at how POWERFUL play is!

Tonight I looked through all my old papers and found a poem that was shared to me by one of my professors in college. I hope to inspire you with this beautiful piece.

Ann :)

Just Playing

When I am building in the block room, please don’t say I’m “just playing”. For you see, I’m learning as I play, about balance and shapes. Who knows, I may be an architect someday.

When I’m getting all dressed up, setting the table, caring for the babies, don’t get the idea I’m “just playing”. For, you see, I’m learning as I play; I may be a mother or a father someday.

When you see me up to my elbows in paint or standing at an easel, or molding and shaping clay, please don’t let me hear you say, “He is just playing”. For, you see, I’m learning as I play. I’m expressing myself and being creative. I may be an artist or an inventor someday.

When you see me sitting in a chair “reading” to an imaginary audience, please don’t laugh and think I’m “just playing”. For, you see, I’m learning as I play. I may be a teacher someday.

When you see me combing the bushes for bugs, or packing my pockets with choice things I find, don’t pass it off as “just play”. For you see, I’m learning as I play. I may be a scientist someday.

When you see me engrossed in a puzzle or some “plaything” at my school, please don’t feel the time is wasted in “play”. For, you see, I’m learning as I play. I’m learning to solve problems and concentrate. I may be in business someday.

When you see me cooking or tasting foods, please don’t think that because I enjoy it, it is “just play”. I’m learning to follow direction and see differences. I may be a cook someday.

When you see me learning to skip, hop, run and move my body, please don’t say I’m “just playing”. For, you see, I’m learning as I play. I’m learning how my body works. I may be a doctor, nurse or athlete someday.

When you ask me what I’ve done at school today, and I say, “I just played”, please don’t misunderstand me. For you see, I’m learning as I play. I’m learning to enjoy and be successful in my work. I’m preparing for tomorrow. Today, I am a child and my work is play.

Beny and the grasshopper

A few days ago Beny found a grasshopper whilst playing in the garden area. He wanted to take it home to show mom, dad and Gracie (his sister).

Beny inquired about where grasshoppers live and we found out that they live in meadows and fields. I also told him about what the word habitat means.

After our short talk, Beny decided that he should put the grasshopper back in the garden because “That’s where they live. If I take it home I will keep it in a bottle and it might die.”  Then he asked me to take photos so he can still show mom, dad and Gracie!

What a truly responsible and caring boy you are Benjamin! :)

Patterns

This week we learnt about PATTERNS.

Beny said: PATTERNS ARE THINGS THAT REPEAT AND REPEAT AND REPEAT.
Chloe said: PATTERN IS RED, BLUE, RED, BLUE.
Nolann said: PATTERN IS BOY, GIRL, BOY, GIRL.

Ellie, Chloe and Clara made their own patterns using our cubes! They were such risk-takers!

Hi Parents!

Happy Sunday! First of all, I would like to thank everyone for coming to our Open House on Friday. It was truly a success! The children were all very happy to see you singing with us at morning circle time. Thank you, dear parents!

Water Fun is finally happening this Friday! The students are all very excited about it! Please do note that I will not be in school that day (I will miss it!) but I do hope that you all come and get wet with the Pre-K-2 group! If you do decide to come, I ask that you please help get the children changed in the classroom. Change time will be at 1:00 PM. Note that Pre-K students are free to have their snacks outside as there will be marquees in case they get tired or hungry.

Attached is the flyer for more information. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Joely Ann :)
